D.Razumkov meets with Swiss President S. Sommaruga

“Ukraine greatly appreciates Switzerland's support to our reforms in progress,” -- Dmytro Razumkov

During his official visit to Switzerland, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Dmytro Razumkov met with the President of the Swiss Confederation Mrs Simonetta Sommaruga. He congratulated S. Sommaruga on her election as Swiss President and expressed high hopes for further cooperation between Ukraine and Switzerland in the near future.

“The interaction of the Government of Switzerland and the Parliament of Ukraine is an important component in our effective bilateral relations. We are grateful for the support to Ukraine’s reforms and we look forward to further strengthening the cooperation of our countries,” Dmytro Razumkov stated.

In particular, among the areas in which Ukraine could share the Swiss experience, there were named the decentralization reform and instruments or procedures of direct democracy.

“In Switzerland, there is successful practice when people are subjects of the power of legislative initiative.  Ukraine is also making its first steps towards this direction. We have already developed a range of bills which are meant to extend the list of direct democracy forms: mechanisms of national and local referenda, popular veto, and withdrawal of people’s representatives. I hope we will be able to consider them in the near future,” Dmytro Razumkov averred.

The speaker also stressed that Ukraine’s reforms implemented are all aimed at creating favourable framework conditions for investors.

In addition, Dmytro Razumkov thanked the President for the technical and humanitarian support that Switzerland provides to Ukraine.

“We hope that this assistance will be expanded in the future. This is one of the key issues, because Switzerland is the only country that provides assistance both to citizens living alongside the delimitation line and to those who are forced to stay behind it,” the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada stressed.
