Speaker tomahawks court’s decision on avenues renaming, undertaking to call extra session of parliament

(  Press Service of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine )

“Abolition by the Kyiv District Administrative Court of renaming the two avenues in honour of Stepan Bandera and Roman Shukhevych runs counter to the de-communization law in force and will surely be appealed,” – Andriy Parubiy

During his Wednesday briefing on June 26, the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy gave detailed comments on the above court’s decision pointed at cancelling the new names of the two avenues.

"It is the next step of the revenge that the "fifth column" is trying to carry out,” said Andriy Parubiy and added that such attacks would be met with a "crushingly severe rebuff".

“This decision is in conflict with the current law on de-communization and will be appealed for sure," said the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada and expressed confidence that the appeal would result in its further cancellation. "We should not tolerate this as a precedent, so that there would be no such court decisions in the future," said Andriy Parubiy.

Afterwards, the Chairman of the Parliament expressed his concern about the fact that Ukraine’s judicial system is used "as a mechanism and a tool for revenge".

"We will do our utmost to ensure that such decisions cannot go through our judicial system in the future.  We shall appeal.  We shall prepare a very powerful and well-reasoned legal base," Andriy Parubiy once again emphasized.  - In Kyiv, there shall be a Bandera Avenue and a Shukhevych Avenue, as stipulated by the law on de-communization".
