Ruslan Stefanchuk, "I propose to bring inter-parliamentary ties between democracies to a qualitatively new level"

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

Ukraine will defend its people and its democratic values. This was emphasized by Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Ruslan Stefanchuk during the Summit for Democracy. The event brought together parliamentarians from around the world to discuss common responsibilities for strengthening democracy.
"We are grateful for the political and military support provided by the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and some EU democracies. At the same time, some of Europe's old democracies have limited themselves to statements, calls for restraint, dialogue and compromise with the aggressor," Ruslan Stefanchuk said.
He said democracies around the world needed to come together to Build Back Better World (B3W).
"To this end, I propose to bring inter-parliamentary relations between democracies to a qualitatively new level, which will allow parliaments to interact effectively in real time and make important decisions in unison," said the Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine.
Ruslan Stefanchuk considers the system of inter-parliamentary relations outdated, when friendship groups visit each other from time to time.
"A positive example is the cooperation between the parliaments of Ukraine, Poland and Lithuania, when we meet to develop a common position on issues relevant to us and then jointly communicate decisions," said the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
The Speaker of the Parliament proposes to develop new democratic criteria and suggest ways to achieve them.
"We stand for transparency, the rule of law and the freedom to do business, an active civil society and independent media. But it is probably time to revise and update the criteria of democracy in order to unite our states more strongly in combating global threats, such as armed aggression, cyber wars, COVID-19 and others," Ruslan Stefanchuk said.
The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada noted that in this connection such a proposal as the revision of the formats of Collective Security is ripe.
"Perhaps less global than NATO, military alliances between several countries will allow democracies to feel more confident. But collective security involves more than just the military. We must learn to work together to counter harmful propaganda that distorts the facts. Another challenge for collective security is energy security. The use of energy as a weapon is unacceptable, and we must also have an action plan in this regard," said Ruslan Stefanchuk.
The Speaker of the Parliament of Ukraine also made a proposal to ensure better economic integration of democratic countries and propose new formats for this. According to him, one of the priorities should be comprehensive and joint counteraction to climate change.
