Foreign affairs committee head H.Hopko partakes in respectable Riga security conference

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

The Riga event was dedicated to the pressing issues of external policy and security, the Eastern Partnership’s priorities, popularization of the EU External Investment Plan (EIP) and anti-Russian sanctions.

Within the conference, the head of the Committee on Foreign Affairs Hanna Hopko held a range of important meetings with the Latvian colleagues. During the meetings, there were discussed bilateral cooperation, the need to strengthen sanctions against the Russian Federation and the release of political prisoners.  Particular attention was paid to the experience exchange targeted at preventing Russia’s interference in elections.

In the course of the visit, the committee head met with local Ukrainians and honoured T.Shevchenko’s memory with laying flowers on the monument.

She also paid a visit to a Ukrainian school in Riga with the aim to discuss future full transition of school education to the Lettish language, thus “ensuring equal opportunities for everyone to receive a high-quality education and a decent job in Latvia”.

In this regard Hanna Hopko observed: "For the model, we need to take European countries, which reliably and systematically protect their languages. This week our parliament will have a chance to finally accomplish its historic mission - to adopt the Law on the State Language".

Worthy of note

The Riga conference took place on September 28-29 in Riga, Latvia, having assembled seven hundred odd core experts in diplomacy, external policy and defence. The forum focused on NATO’s future, Brexit and Russian global influence. The opening address was delivered by the President of Latvia.
