Ukraine, Italy to widen inter-parliamentary cooperation at a new – now implicitly official – level

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

Ukraine and Italy are very interested in deepening cooperation at the parliamentary level

There took place a meeting of representatives of parliamentary relations groups of the Verkhovna Rada and the Italian parliament.

These issues were discussed at the meeting of members of the Ukraine-Italy inter-parliamentary friendship group with the leader of a similar group at the Italian parliament Ugo Cappellacci, a member of the “Forza Italia” political party, and the Honourary Consul of Ukraine in the Sardinia (Sardegna) region Anthony Grande.

At the beginning of the meeting, Serhii Alieksieiev, as a co-chair of the friendship group, noted that this sitting was quite informative and eagerly committed to drafting a follow-up action plan for the immediate future. He then reminded that in 2017 there was signed a memorandum of understanding between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the Italian Chamber of Deputies, which did bring the inter-parliamentary cooperation up to a new institutional level.

According to the regulations of the Italian parliament, five MPs are to be appointed to co-operate with another country’s parliament in certain areas. Ukraine also needs to select five parliamentarians from the group, who will oversee the set areas. Among the main areas of further cooperation, there might be distinguished some, of which, in particular are political, economic, cultural, and medical spheres as well – seeing that many Ukrainian soldiers are currently undergoing rehabilitation treatment in Italy.

A very important event is also scheduled for the immediate future - an unveiling ceremony of the monument to Taras Shevchenko in the center of Florence.

In his turn, Ugo Cappellacci expressed confidence that this meeting would lay down the foundations for further fruitful cooperation. He stressed that the Italy-Ukraine friendship group, which had existed up to this very day, was, by its nature, informal.  However, under the new legislation, there has been re-established a new – now fully official – group.

Ugo Cappellacci informed that in the near future there would be held a kick-off meeting of the group with the participation of the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine to Italy Yevhen Perelyhin, where officials in charge and directions of the future work would be determined. It was then observed that it would be very advisable for the new group to start its work from the issues of transport communication, as it secures close links and cooperation between the countries.

Ugo Cappellacci also said that for the next spring there is already a schedule for a series of events to promote Italy in Ukraine, as well as many other projects that could be implemented in concert. Ugo Cappellacci's position pointed at strengthening cultural ties was widely supported by the conferees.

In his turn, the Honourary Consul of Ukraine in the Sardinia region Anthony Grande, who was, too, in attendance, stressed the importance of establishing personal contacts, which might be very useful for furtherance of mutual business relationships.

At the end of the meeting, Serhii Alieksieiev noted that economic cooperation is a strong basis of political cooperation for both of the countries. And given that the Ukraine-Italy inter-parliamentary friendship group includes representatives of nearly all parliamentary committees, this group might securely be relied upon to promote many areas of cooperation.
