At IPA forum, Chairman Parubiy states tripled efforts may bring Ukraine’s membership in EU faster and smoother

“Together with Poland and Lithuania, we are bringing near the day when Ukraine will actually become a member of the European community," -- the Verkhovna Rada Speaker Andriy Parubiy

The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy together with the Speaker of the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania Viktoras Pranckietis and the Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland Stanislaw Karczewski held a joint  briefing within the X Session of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (IPA) of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the Seimas of the Republic of Lithuania and the Sejm and Senate of the Republic of Poland "Security. Development.  Democracy. United We Strong", which took place on June 7-8, 2019 in Kyiv.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada observed that the current session has made the final document spurring to follow the strategy of 2025 and 2027 - that is to say the strategy of Ukraine's plan on its path to the EU. "This is the margin of opportunity for Ukraine to join the EU," said A. Parubiy, and stressed that it is necessary now to start appropriate preparations on the basis of the EU Strategy, taking into account the Lithuanian Seimas’s initiative "Ukraine-2027".

The politician also said at that IPA session that there was formed fourth committee within the framework of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Lithuania-Poland-Ukraine - the Security Committee. "We have agreed that coordination of our security actions is important and relevant, as the hybrid challenges our countries are facing in opposing the Russian aggression are quite similar and have much in common. These, in particular, are informational security, cyber-security, energy security, and humanitarian security," he explained.

A.Parubiy stressed that security in today's world is not only weapons and tanks, but it is made of a much wider range of issues.

“We have thus initiated signing a statement by our regional parliaments against the Nord Stream 2," he recalled, and noted that the ongoing IPA session has decided to entitle each IPA member state to depute 12 delegates per country.

On behalf of parliaments of the three countries, there was also emphasized the acute need of further prolongation and increase of the burden of sanctions  against the Russian Federation and solidarity in pursuing Ukraine’s course to European integration.

A.Parubiy thanked the heads of parliaments, the parliaments, governments and peoples of Poland and Lithuania "for the incredible support that Ukraine has been feeling since the EuroMaidan events".

"There are no more powerful, sincere and loyaler friends of Ukraine in the world than Poland and Lithuania," the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine emphasized. – On behalf of the entire people of Ukraine I would like to thank you for your encouragement  and assistance we have seen over the past few years. I am convinced and truly believe that our further strategy will bring us closer in our collaborative effort and hasten the day when peace and security is Europewide, when Ukraine becomes a member of the family of European nations and the European community".

In his turn, the Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas Viktoras Pranckietis noted that the key point of the Assembly’s agenda is "security of all our countries from the aspect of Ukraine, and Ukraine itself as our subject of interest". Speaking about Ukraine's path to EU membership, he noted that the people of Ukraine are seemingly united and prepared to continue reforms necessary for the membership.  "Ukraine's success is our success!" V. Pranckietis emphasized.

He also said that two days ago Lithuania’s Seimas had adopted a resolution on the deportation of Crimean Tatars by the Soviet Union recognizing it as genocide, and took the opportunity to hand over the resolution text to the Speaker of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy.

The Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland Stanislaw Karczewski observed that the Assembly comes off "with very good results for the Polish side". "We have recognized the presidential elections to be fully democratic, and this is a huge stride towards building democracy in Ukraine. Highly valued are also seen the efforts for the sake of reforms in Ukraine," he stressed.

Stanislaw Karczewski stated about full readiness of Poland to share with Ukraine its experience of accession to the EU and NATO, and also thanked Ukraine and Lithuania for the joint declaration and overt criticism towards the Nord Stream 2 project.

The Marshal of the Senate of the Republic of Poland invited the Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy to Warsaw for the next IPA meeting.
