Morning session's over

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

The Chairperson of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy opened the session, with 353 parliamentarians currently registered in the House.

The presiding officer announced that according to the decision of the Central Election Commission, Roman Zvarych had been recognized as an elected representative of the people over the national multi-mandate constituency. From the rostrum of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, the newcomer made his oath of allegiance to Ukraine, and confirmed his recent joining the Petro Poroshenko Bloc faction.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada greeted the newly elected member of parliament, and said that today the Parliament would consider the status of the Chernobyl disaster’s victims as well as issues of nuclear policy and nuclear safety.

Representatives of parliamentary factions and groups made their announcements, statements, reports, and proposals.

Parliamentarians then switched over to the issues of the ongoing agenda.

First reading bills taken

On remuneration of child nutrition allowances: Draft bill No.6230

Taken on the first reading was there the bill amending the law of Ukraine on the status and social protection of citizens who had suffered from the Chornobyl disaster.

The bill is aimed at swapping the existing free-of-charge nutrition regime covering a wide range of schoolchildren and students (classmen, collegers, etc.), studying throughout the nuclearly polluted areas (including children with the Chornobyl-caused disabilities), in favour of the children’s nutrition monthly allowances payable during the period of study until coming of lawful age (attainment of majority), the payment procedure and the rates of which are settable by the Cabinet of Ministers.

Adoption of this instrument will contribute to a more effective implementation of the state social policy in terms of ensuring appropriate monetary compensations for free nutrition to children who suffered from the Chornobyl disaster.

On nuclear waste management: Draft bill No.6089

Taken on the first reading was there the bill amending certain laws of Ukraine concerning nuclear waste management.

The purpose of the bill is to bring Ukraine's legislative framework in the field of radioactive waste management in line with the internationally agreed safety requirements for improving the radioactive waste classification system, based on long-term considerations of safety and methods of ultimate disposal.

The draft law brings a set of new definitions and classifications of high importance, making it easier to manage and dispose the waste.

The presiding officer closed the meeting.
