Chair’s Memorial Day and Reconciliation Address

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

Dear Fellow Ukrainians,

By tradition, on May 8 Ukraine alongside with the whole free world does mark the Memorial Day and Reconciliation. It’s symbolical, this occasion routinely offers on the eve of the ninth of May – the Day of Victory over Nazism in the Second World War.

Nowadays, Russian imperial revanchists, who have rejected the lessons of the World War II, are re-kindling it, the new war, into the very heart of Europe.

By force of occupation of the Crimea and a part of the Donbas, Putin has become a new Hitler, and just like his ideological predecessor has violated the law of nations in its entirety. As a modern international criminal, Putin has set at defiance the fundamental principle of borders inviolability and undermined the international security system established after the Second World War.

On this day, I am calling on all Ukrainian citizens to remember the feat of arms and heroism of the war veterans, the participants in the Ukrainian liberation movement, and to bow before the blessed memory of the innocent victims of the war.

Giving a profound respect to those who over seventy years ago defended Ukraine and the whole world from the Nazi invasion, I would like to express my heartfelt words of gratitude and support to our soldiers who are now protecting the independence and sovereignty of Ukraine from Putin’s fascism on the eastern front. Russian imperial revanchism seeks to use the victory over Nazism in the Second World War in its information war and the aggression against Ukraine. Every May, Russian agents of influence cynically endevour to organize provocations in Ukraine.

Let us not allow the invader to utilize the feat of our fallen and living heroes for provocations against Ukraine!

Let us remember and celebrate the memory of all the Ukrainians who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom!

Likewise more than seventy years ago our people defeated the Nazi occupation, we are now going to drub Putin, and the Russia-occupied Crimea and Donbas shall be returned for sure.

We are fighting for peace on our native land.  We are fighting for the peaceful and safer life of the entire free world.  We’re on the side of truth!  God is with us!  We’re sure to win!
