Speaker's UA security all-round talks

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

“Ukraine ought to be in immediate interaction with its NATO partners,” -- Andriy Parubiy, the Chairman

The Speaker of the Ukrainian Parliament A.Parubiy spoke at the opening of the round table discussion "Reforming the National Security System of Ukraine: The Role of Parliament".

"I’d like to observe that Ukraine, defending its sovereignty and statehood, protects the entire civilized world.  It is my strong belief, Putin's threat is a global menace, and this aggression and harmfulness have different manifestations," said A. Parubiy.

The Head of the Parliament stressed that "security dimension is not only military security, but also informational, cybernetic, and energy, because Putin’s authorities in Russia use all methods to achieve their global goals".

"In these global purposes, there is a very special place allotted for Ukraine.  After announcing that "the collapse of the USSR is the greatest tragedy of the twentieth century, Putin acknowledged that the present Russian Federation, its leadership seeks to bring back the geopolitical influence that the Kremlin once had. Ukraine may and must rely on the support of the civilized world in this struggle, not only to strengthen the state’s armed forces, but also to reinforce Ukraine’s security in all manifestations and forms of those attacks carried out by Putin”.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine stressed that over the years of aggression Ukraine has done a lot to strengthen its armed forces and the entire security sector. The heavily debated national security law, taken by the Parliament on the first reading, was called a crucial step by the Speaker.  "NATO experts were involved in drafting of this bill to properly reform the security sector, as close to the overseas standards as possible," he recalled.

The Parliament’s Chair once again stressed that "Ukraine should be in solid communication with its NATO partners and comply with the recommendations of our partners from the Alliance”.

A.Parubiy said that the Parliament had overnight adopted the resolution on the appeal of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine to the international community on the inadmissibility of the Nord Stream 2 gas line and the Russian Federation’s monopoly on the world gas markets. Rada calls on foreign parliaments and governments, the world business community, journalists and public activists to do their utmost to impose a complete and irreversible ban on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. A.Parubiy stressed that the would-be launch of the project Nord Stream 2 could lead to new military threats and to even a full-scale offensive of the Russian troops to Ukraine. The Head of the Parliament expressed his overt hope that the countries of the European Union and the United States together with Ukraine would not allow launching the project. He also reminded that the above project ban letter had been signed by speakers of six European parliaments in order to “demonstrate our united position on the issue".

A.Parubiy remarked that this round table would be another vigorous step to developing joint actions and common directions for ensuring peace through stopping the ongoing aggression.

The purpose of the round table is to work out a common consolidated position on reforming the country’s security system, taking into account the proposals of parliamentary factions and foreign partners of Ukraine.
