Chair meets foreign affairs MEPs for closer ties

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Andriy Parubiy met with the Delegation of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, headed by Laima Andrikiene.

The Head of Parliament thanked the delegates for the continued support of Ukraine by the European Parliament in hard times.  He noted that relations between the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and the European Parliament became far intenser, and he then commended the visiting by the MEPs (members of the European Parliament) of the occupied territories, since “this experience gives a deeper understanding of the processes that are taking place in Ukraine".

The Speaker informed the guests about the progress in deep and systemic reforms in Ukraine in all the spheres of the public life under the proxy war in the eastern part of the country.

The joint efforts of the Europeans with the Government of Ukraine were said to having resulted in the Roadmap for implementation of the EU Association Agreement, comprising fifty-seven enactments to be taken by the Parliament. During the last three weeks, there have been approved 13 laws from the list above, including the bills on national security and anticorruption court, stressed then the politician. The pension and medical reforms were carried out, and the largest reform of local self-government   and communities was continued.

Mentioned also by the Chairman of Parliament was there the moment that in order to account for the recommendations of the Venice Commission, an expert team had been invited to participate in the preparation of the second reading bill on anticorruption court.

There are profound changes in the reform of the Ukrainian Parliament. In particular, two bills were adopted on the first reading: the enactments on limiting the number of committees to 20, and the distribution of committees according to the D’Hondt method. "This is a great success, and I hope we shall soon come right up to the second reading, thus taking over the experience of the European parliaments," said A.Parubiy and added:  - We stand firmly on the path of reforms". Many steps have been taken to implement the Parliament's reform, in particular, there were rendered a free access to all the related documentation and a topical cluster consideration of legislative issues introduced.

The Head of Parliament expressed his confidence in a swift adoption of the anticorruption court law in this May.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada paid a special attention to the inadmissibility of the North Stream 2 implementation. According to him, this "issue goes far beyond the bounds of economy itself - it is an issue of global security, with Europe including".

In her turn, Laima Andrikiene noted that "what the Ukrainians have managed to accomplish in extremely short terms is striking".

The head of the delegation confirmed the deep support to Ukraine rendered by the European Parliament on the country's path to reforms and democracy, and called on to step up the fulfilment of Ukraine's commitments on implementation of the EU Association Agreement. "The main goal of our work is to assess the progress made in the Association Agreement implementation. We want to see headway in all the spheres," she said, and added that Ukraine had been offered a new investment plan to be carried out through a trust fund.

“I do hope our contacts will be reenergized to attain another portion of advantages,” in conclusion said Laima Andrikiene, the Head of Delegation of the EP Committee on Foreign Affairs.
