Andriy Parubiy: No basis for a snap parliamentary election

( Information Department of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Secretariat )

Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Andriy Parubiy has stressed that “there is no basis to call an early parliamentary election in Ukraine.” He said so this Monday in response to a question by journalists about such a possibility.

Parubiy noted that “the discussion over early elections has been around since this Verhkovna Rada and all the Radas before it.” He said that in the current situation, the early election would rather be a destabilizing scenario which would cause turbulence in the country. The Chairman asserted that “the Verkhovna Rada, the executive power and the President share a common stance on this scenario and view it as undesirable for Ukraine.” He is also convinced that speculation over an early election has no solid ground.

“Next year is going to be a challenging one, with presidential and parliamentary elections, and I can see that as the elections approach, political discussions gain momentum, as does the desire to politicize the whole thing,” Parubiy said and added, “I will do my best to keep the Verkhovna Rada away from a whirlwind of political emotions to ensure Parliament’s smooth and responsible work that the situation requires.”

The Chairman noted that “we have a rather ambitious agenda: the Anti-Corruption Court, the national security law, the law on elections and a set of laws needed for the Association Agreement implementation. That is why we should focus on our work and decisions to be made instead of thinking about an early election,” he stressed.
